My Main Line: Why The Harris Family Loves Newtown Square

Isabel and Paul Harris and their son Tripp love where they live. Here’s how they make the most of the Main Line and nearby Philadelphia.

What makes your neighborhood feel like home?

The people! We relocated from North Carolina and didn’t know anybody here, but our neighbors have given us a sense of community we didn’t expect to have.

What were the important things you considered when selecting your child’s school?

We fell in love with Episcopal Academy after the first tour. It’s a very challenging yet nurturing school. We love how comprehensive it is, and the staff has been amazing helping us navigate everything. Tripp asks everyday when can he finally start his “big boy school.” He is extremely excited to go there!

What does a typical weekend look like for your family?

House projects! Our son loves to do work around the house (especially outside with gardening). We spend lots of quality family time on the weekends with a visit to King of Prussia Mall. Tripp loves Lolli and Pops there. We also plan little weekend getaways or visit extended family, mostly in Virginia.

What are your favorite places to spend family time?

We love spending time at our house. We travel A LOT so it is nice to have weekends where we just relax at home watching movies and eating popcorn. Our son loves the Franklin Institute, Sky Zone, any parks or playgrounds (Clem Macrone Park is high on his list of favorites), and riding his scooter around the city.

What is your favorite thing to gift for kids’ birthday parties, and where do you go to find gifts?

We love a good Playmobil set, or anything crafty. Our favorite toy store is Big Smile Toys in Paoli.

Where do you most like to dine out as a family?

We love Nectar, Teikoku, Christopher’s, White Dog Cafe, Seasons 52, Fellini’s Cafe (Berwyn), Pizzeria Vetri, True Food Kitchen, Sampan and Vetri. With family life so busy, what are the shortcuts you use to save time? Getting Tripp’s clothes and lunchbox ready the night before helps, and living so close to school is the best shortcut EVER. For travel, I make a packing list detailing what we will need every day we are away.

What is the best piece of parenting advice you’ve received since having children?

The days are long but the years are short. This just hit the spot. Time truly does time fly with kids.

Where would you take family friends visiting from out of town? What are your must-do local attractions?

My sister-in-law LOVES gardening so Valley Forge Flowers and Terrain are always a pit stop. We love going to Philadelphia and showing family the history of such a cool city. Longwood and Chanticleer gardens are also a must.
