Tutoring by Matt, LLC

Tutoring by Matt is a Philadelphia-based tutoring business run by Matt Altonji, who has worked with high school students for more than ten years. He covers SAT and ACT prep, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and high school math, in person around Philadelphia and online for families anywhere in the U.S.

Matt teaches every session himself. Families work with him from the first phone call through test day, providing high-quality and personalized support to students and their parents.

SAT students start with an official College Board practice test. Matt reviews the results to determine where students are losing points so that he can focus his attention on addressing those specific gaps. Sometimes it’s geometry a student hasn’t seen since freshman year. Other times it’s pacing, or not knowing when to use Desmos. Throughout all sessions, practice tests are given every 2-3 weeks to ensure progress is being made and parents are given updates regularly.

Recent students have seen their scores improve from a 1090 to 1260 and 1200 to 1310 on official SAT exams and seen ACT Math scores increase from an 18 to 26.

Before tutoring full time, Matt spent six years in management consulting. He has a BA in Neuroscience from Colgate University and a master’s in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University. He is a member of the National Test Prep Association (NTPA) and The Association of Test Preparation, Admissions, and Private Tutoring (TPAPT).
