From Disney Magic to Dance Camp Wonder: The Story Behind Twirl
Former Disney performer Sam Sinns brings theme park magic to Newtown Square with immersive summer camps that transform traditional dance classes into theatrical adventures kids won't forget.
When Sam Sinns left his dance job at Walt Disney World to move to the Philly suburbs, his vision was to bring the magic of Disney to his Newtown Square dance studio, Twirl. This summer, dance camp attendees will experience that same enchantment as Sam transforms traditional classes into immersive theatrical adventures.
Sam has over twenty years of experience performing for the Disney company. He danced two contracts at Tokyo Disneyland, toured with Disney’s Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast, and performed in over twenty-five shows and parades at Walt Disney World including Finding Nemo the Musical, Hoop Dee Doo Revue, and Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage.
Beyond Traditional Dance Camp: Creating Immersive Summer Experiences
During the school year, Twirl provides dance classes to kids age 3-18, but the studio shifts gears for the summer. Instead of focusing on dance training, Sam leverages his Disney experiences (with the help of an enthusiastic camp staff) to create magical adventures in highly-themed summer camps.
Breaking the mold of the typical “dance/ snack/ craft” model of dance studio camps, Sam utilizes lights, props, and costumes to create immersive theatrical experiences. “Planning Twirl summer camps is like putting together a production. And before we open the doors to let the first campers in for the day, I always say to the staff, ‘It’s showtime!'” remarks Sam with a grin.
Disney-Inspired Innovation: Theme Park Magic in Every Camp Day
When it comes to camp content, Sam is heavily influenced by The Disney Company’s culture of creativity and innovation. Sam explains, “Every camp day includes a themed obstacle course or some sort of encounter that I approach like a Disney Imagineer designing a theme park attraction. We create something different and new every single day and kids love it.” Watch their video showcasing Twirl’s Top Ten Camp Experiences:
Fun First: Why Twirl Camps Appeal to Dancers and Non-Dancers Alike
Sam says that the goal for Twirl summer camps is simple. “We don’t run camps in order to recruit kids to register for our dance season. We don’t need that. Our classes are popular enough. For our camps, we have one thing in mind. We want Twirl summer camps to be the best days of a kid’s summer. That’s it.” There is a dance element to Twirl camps, but with the main emphasis being on fun, Twirl has a regular camp following that includes boys and girls who don’t take dance classes during the school year.
Exciting 2025 Summer Partnerships: Taylor Swift, Baking, and Acrobatics
This summer, Twirl is partnering with AR Workshop Malvern in a Taylor Swift camp where campers will complete two art projects. Twirl is also teaming up with Hippie Chic Cakes in Rise of Red camp where kids will come home every day with a baked good that they decorate themselves. Also popular are camps that include acrobatics, which offer an opportunity for beginner and experienced acrobats to get upside down and have fun.
