ESF Camps Celebrates 40+ Years of Building Confidence Through MaxJoy
What began on a single tennis court now spans 12 locations across six states
ESF Camps now operates 12 award-winning locations across six states, but it started with a teenage entrepreneur and a borrowed tennis court. Michael Rouse, Co-Founder and Executive Director, was just 15 in 1982 when he launched his first tennis camp at The Haverford School to earn money for the sports he played.
“I needed to make money to be able to play nationals,” Rouse recalls. Head of School, Davis Parker, agreed โ with conditions. Beyond a donation per student and insurance, he asked Rouse to provide free camp tuition for two children of a single mother from West Philadelphia who worked two jobs – one of them being a nighttime cleaner at the school. That experience shaped ESF’s commitment to inclusivity from day one.
Today, ESF serves campers ages 3 to 16 across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, New York, and Connecticut. The Aspen Institute ranks ESF as the number one camp program, recognizing their unique approach to youth development. See the many other accolades ESF Camps & Experiences have earned over the years.
The MaxJoy Philosophy
ESF’s guiding principle centers on what Rouse calls “MaxJoy” โ a framework designed to boost confidence, deepen friendships, help children learn new skills, and ignite positivity.
“ESF is a place where safety is felt, friendships flourish, belonging is celebrated, and skills soar,” Rouse explains. The philosophy emphasizes healthy challenges and progress over perfection. “It’s not a ribbon for everyone. It’s an opportunity where they can earn things and they can grow as a result of that.”
The camp incorporates character development through daily traditions like pep rallies, dance contests, and what ESF calls “catching greatness” โ celebrating campers when they demonstrate growth and effort.
An All-Adult Staff Makes the Difference
ESF maintains one of the lowest staff-to-camper ratios in the region with an entirely adult team. Staff members are teachers, graduate students, or undergraduate students studying elementary education, special education, child psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, or physical therapy.
“All of our staff are adults,” Rouse emphasizes. “We have an internship program with about 15 universities.”
Every staff member completes 20 hours of training before the summer begins. ESF takes staffing seriously โ they only rehire the very best from one summer to the next, the staff who showed real excellence.
Constant Innovation Keeps Programs Fresh
For over 30 years, ESF has held an annual “Kaizen conference” each fall. The leadership team reviews family feedback, evaluates what worked, and deliberately changes elements to keep programs fresh.
Rouse learned this approach during 16 years of benchmarking with the Disney Company. “One of the things we learned at Disney was that you have to constantly be relevant. Feedback is everything. It’s your guiding light.”
The pandemic reinforced this commitment to evolution. “Children learn differently, they communicate differently,” Rouse notes. “We really have always been focused on trying to bring out the best in our youth.”
Blue-Chip Partnerships Enhance Programming
ESF has built partnerships with major organizations that enhance the camp experience. The Philadelphia Phillies approached ESF 32 years ago to run their youth development programs and adult experiences. Today, ESF operates the number one ranked baseball camp in Major League Baseball, offering 16 weeks of Phillies Baseball Academy programming at 10 locations throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Additionally, every January the ESF team delivers Phillies fans the ultimate week-long experience in Clearwater, FL to step onto the diamond at the annual Phillies Phantasy Camp to live out their wildest MLB dreams.
The 76ers partnered with ESF six years ago for basketball development programs including clinics, day and overnight camps across multiple locations in the region. ESF also collaborates with The Franklin Institute for STEM programming and recently partnered with New Balance for the first-of-its-kind top 20 boys & girls elite high school basketball experience.
From Day Camp to Pre-College Programs
ESF offers something for every age and interest level. Campers can “go wide” with traditional day camps and multi-sports programs, or “go deep” with specialty camps in sports, STEAM, and more.
For high school students, ESF runs intensive pre-college programs at the University of Pennsylvania. The five-week pre-med program accepts 104 students from around the world through an application process. “It’s the only program of its kind throughout the world when it comes to this pre-med program for high school students,” Rouse says.
The engineering and computer science programs serve approximately 300 students globally. All ESF programs provide what Rouse calls tools for a camper’s “tool belt” โ skills they’ll use throughout their lives.
A Balanced Approach to Youth Sports and Activities
ESF intentionally designs its curriculum based on research about youth development and athletic training. Dr. Jim Loehr and Dr. Muniya Khana, psychologists on ESF’s advisory team, have conducted extensive research that informs this approach.
“We’ve been very intentional and deliberate in the way we create our program offerings because the objective is to really build the platforms for campers so that they could be the best version of themselves,” Rouse explains.
ESF’s multi-sport programming allows children to explore different sports and develop diverse skills. The curriculum is designed by grade and age to ensure appropriate challenges at each developmental stage.
Rouse draws on his own experience as a competitive tennis player who competed on the pro circuit. “I was a multi-sport athlete all the way up through my sophomore year in high school. I grew up with kids who were much better than I was. It wasn’t until I reached college level where I started beating them. Peaking at a later stage in life was better for me in so many ways due to playing multiple sports.”
For families whose children thrive with focused training in a single sport, ESF also offers specialty sports camps including comprehensive programs with the Phillies and 76ers. The key is giving children options that match their interests and developmental readiness.
Friends Select: ESF’s Center City Location
Summer 2026 marks ESF’s third year at Friends Select School in Center City Philadelphia. Families from the city had requested a Center City location for 30 years, but finding the right campus took time.
“Michael Gary, the Head of School, instantly became an immediate friend and school partner,” Rouse says. “He loved our philosophy.” The campus features an indoor pool, rooftop outdoor fields, STEM labs, and studios โ everything needed to deliver the full ESF experience in an urban setting.
Dream Camp Foundation: Making Camp Accessible
The ESF Dream Camp Foundation, formalized 30 years ago, provides 300+ scholarships annually. The Foundation operates through business contributions and partnerships with other organizations.
Rouse reflects, โFrom day one of starting ESF and extending those first two scholarships, I realized how important it was to build an inclusive camp community โ I saw first-hand how impactful it was to every camper.โ
Dream Camp also provides opportunities for ESF alumni to return as mentors and counselors, creating meaningful service experiences for high school students building college applications.
Inclusion as a Core Value
ESF has maintained inclusion programs for children with diverse needs at all locations since 1982. Rouse’s sister Christine, who has cerebral palsy, was one of the first campers. Each child receives an individual assessment to ensure the right match, with shadows provided when needed.
“What makes us different makes us beautiful,” Rouse attributes to his sisterโs famous saying that has driven ESF’s disability awareness program, which helps young campers learn to communicate and understand differences.
Christine Rouse went on to create Acting Without Boundaries (AWB), a free year-round off-Broadway theater program for people with disabilities now celebrating its 21st year on the Main Line.
Building Confidence for Life
The average ESF camper stays with the program for eight to nine years, growing from day camp through specialty programs and eventually pre-college experiences with ESFโs BOLD Summers that operates residential pre-college programs in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania .
“We want to give them the tools necessary to be able to be successful in the world,” Rouse explains. “Building confidence and character for each one of our campers is really key.”
After 43 summers, ESF continues focusing on what matters most: creating memorable experiences where children develop skills, build friendships, and discover joy in learning and growing.
