The Phebe Anna Thorne Educators Who Bring the School’s Philosophy to Life
Meet the experienced educators who bring the Phebe Anna Thorne School’s research-based, child-centered philosophy to life at Bryn Mawr College
For nearly 75 years, the Phebe Anna Thorne School at Bryn Mawr College has been shaped not only by research and theory, but by the educators who bring those ideas to life each day. As a laboratory school rooted in child development research, Thorne sits at the intersection of research and practice. It is the faculty and staff who make that balance meaningful for children and families.
Grounded in deep respect for early childhood, Phebe Anna Thorne educators thoughtfully translate theory into daily classroom experiences. Their work reflects a shared commitment to honoring children’s curiosity, individuality, and developmental journey during the most formative years of learning.
A Highly Skilled, Child-Centered Teaching Team
At the heart of the Thorne School is a dedicated team of experienced educators who are knowledgeable, reflective, and responsive. Teachers approach their work with flexibility and creativity, adapting to different learning styles and developmental needs with care and intention.
This blend of research-informed practice, long-standing experience, and a deeply child-centered philosophy allows children to be truly known and supported. Thorne educators believe that a child’s first school experience matters. They understand that these early years play a critical role in shaping confidence, curiosity, and lifelong learning.
Meet the Thorne School Educators
Bev McDonell, Language Enrichment Preschool Program (LEPP)
Bev McDonell has been a cornerstone of the Phebe Anna Thorne School community for more than 25 years. As both the speech-language pathologist and program head of the Language Enrichment Preschool Program (LEPP), Bev brings a lifelong commitment to supporting young children’s communication, language, and social development.
Her work includes assessment, testing, and the thoughtful implementation of individualized strategies that meet each child where they are. Bev collaborates closely with families and educators to identify strengths, support challenges, and create language-rich environments. This collaboration fosters confidence, connection, and growth.
Jodie Baird, Ph.D., Younger Preschool Lead Teacher
Dr. Jodie Baird has been a dedicated member of the Thorne community since 2012. She now serves as lead teacher of the Younger Preschool class. In addition to her classroom role, she is the Coordinator of Student Research and Praxis at the Thorne School, Director of Child and Family Studies, and a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Bryn Mawr College.
Jodie’s teaching reflects a rich integration of research, observation, and relationship-based practice. With a background in child development and psychology, she commits deeply to creating nurturing, developmentally responsive environments where young children feel secure, curious, and empowered to explore.
Rachel Stern, Kindergarten Teacher
Kindergarten teacher Rachel Stern, a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, thoughtfully blends play-based learning with academic foundations in ways that honor how young children learn best. Her approach reflects a deep respect for children’s imagination, curiosity, and growing independence.
In particular, the Kindergarten program’s unique setting inspires Rachel. The Haverford College campus serves as an extension of the classroom, offering opportunities to explore spaces such as the arboretum, art museum, and observatory. Through these experiences, Rachel encourages children to slow down, observe closely, and discover the joy of learning through exploration and play.
A Shared Belief in the Power of Early Childhood
What unites the educators at the Phebe Anna Thorne School is a shared belief in the importance of early childhood education. They understand that early experiences shape how children see themselves as learners, friends, and members of a community.
Thorne educators approach this responsibility with humility and purpose. Their teaching is careful, reflective, and deeply human — grounded in both research and meaningful relationships. They do not rush, label, or overlook children, but instead support them as individuals on their own developmental paths.
Through the dedication, expertise, and heart of its educators, the Phebe Anna Thorne School continues to be a place where childhood is respected, learning is joyful, and the foundation for lifelong growth is thoughtfully laid.
