From Anxious Student to Compassionate Teacher
Nancy Thompson’s journey to becoming an exceptional fifth-grade teacher began with her own struggles as an anxious child. “I often felt anxious at school, and learning was difficult for me,” Nancy recalls. “I decided that when I was older, I would become a teacher who always considers a child’s social and emotional well-being first.” That philosophy guides every aspect of her teaching at Saints Peter and Paul School, where a parent notes, “She not only cares about their academics but also their emotional and psychological well-being. My child adores her and looks forward to school every day.” Colleagues praise Nancy as a team player who puts the needs of her students first, making a positive impact on the entire school community.
Monday Morning Check-Ins
Every week, Nancy starts Monday with a simple classroom check-in, asking students questions like, “What’s your favorite dessert?” or “Which amusement park would you visit?” Each student gets a chance to share, helping them feel heard and easing into the week. “Taking the time to recognize what makes them happy shows students how much I care,” Nancy says. Students even look forward to asking the questions themselves, and the routine strengthens classroom relationships.
Student Council and Leadership in Action
Beyond academics, Nancy works with the school’s Student Council, where students organize charitable drives for homeless teens in Philadelphia. They assemble care bags with essentials, which are then personally delivered to teens in need. “The kids love it and are proud of the difference they’re making,” Nancy says. A fellow teacher who worked with her for six years adds, “We worked well together, and she was always willing to help out with whatever was needed. She’s a team player who puts the needs of her students first!”
Building Empathy and Holistic Learning
Nancy incorporates social-emotional learning and faith into her teaching philosophy. She encourages students to consider others’ feelings, understand different perspectives, and act with kindness. “I want students to feel good about themselves while learning,” she explains. Classroom discussions, literature lessons, and real-life examples help students develop empathy and grow as individuals. Parents echo this sentiment: “She genuinely cares about her students—not just that they understand the content, but that they feel supported and valued. We are truly blessed to have her.”
Looking Ahead
Next year, Nancy plans to continue her Monday check-ins, expand Student Council projects, and deepen her focus on social-emotional learning. Her dedication goes beyond academics, helping students grow in confidence, empathy, and kindness. With her care, guidance, and genuine love for her students, Nancy leaves a lasting impression that shapes not just learners, but thoughtful, compassionate individuals who carry her influence far beyond the classroom.
