A Vision Rooted in Service

Lauren’s journey with SALT Performing Arts began with a powerful realization. Inspired by the Cherokee tale of the two wolves, she shifted her focus from self-serving pursuits to being part of something bigger than herself. “I had this inner voice calling me to be part of something bigger than myself,” Lauren shares. This epiphany led to the creation of SALT, a theatre company that puts creating community at the forefront of its mission.

Building a Resilient Community

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Lauren’s innovative spirit shone brightly. As her friend and client Katie Parker notes, “During the pandemic, when everything was closed down, SALT produced online ‘Cooped Up Cabarets’ that brought cheer into homes with weekly shows as well as a purpose for actors who were unable to perform in front of live audiences.” This creativity not only kept the SALT community connected but also attracted new members seeking connection during challenging times.

Nominated by Katie Parker, Friend and Client

“Lauren created SALT Performing Arts and Stagelight to be a safe place for performers. Lauren’s mission, and the mission of SALT is to first create an enriching community and then, out of that community, produce excellent theater.

Throughout the last few years, SALT has continued to be a light in the darkness for many. Lauren continues to look for ways that SALT can support the community both locally and at a wider level. She is inspirational and a true gift.”

Empowering All Ages and Abilities

Lauren’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in SALT’s diverse programs. The SALT Playhouse for Preschoolers, a partnership with Montgomery School, provides a unique early education experience that combines academics with the arts. “Our goal is to help raise up leaders of love & kindness,” Lauren explains.

Furthermore, SALT’s partnership with Acting Antics allows individuals with autism and other abilities to express themselves through theatre. As Katie Parker emphasizes, “Lauren partnered with Acting Antics, an All Abilities Group, to provide a safe space for individuals with a variety of needs to also live their passion of performing arts.”

Community Impact Beyond the Stage

The organization’s partnership with the Chester County Food Bank demonstrates a commitment to tangible community impact. “Every cast of every show goes to volunteer at the Food Bank together, we collect spices in our Lobby at all of our shows, and we donate a portion of every ticket sale to the Food Bank,” Lauren proudly shares.

Overcoming Challenges with Grace

As a mother of four, Lauren is no stranger to the challenge of balancing her passion for SALT with her commitment to family. Her solution was to build a strong team and delegate responsibilities. “I could not be a one-woman show. I needed a strong team who could uphold the organization with or without me so that I could place boundaries around my time with my family,” she explains. This approach has allowed SALT to grow while enabling Lauren to be present at home.

Mentorship and Empowerment

Lauren’s impact is felt deeply by those within the SALT community. She shares the story of Sandi, a woman in her 50s who found new purpose and passion through SALT. “Since Sandi walked through our doors, I have been honored to help her find her passions and strengths at this stage of her life, and have empowered her with opportunities to put those abilities to good use,” Lauren reflects.

Looking to the Future

With an eye toward continued growth and impact, Lauren is awaiting approval on a $1 million grant to expand SALT’s building and mission. She’s also planning to pursue a business leadership certificate from Harvard School of Business once her youngest child starts preschool.

Through her innovative programs, commitment to inclusivity, and focus on giving back, Lauren McComas has created more than just a theatre company – she has nurtured a thriving community that empowers individuals and positively impacts the world around them. As Lauren often reminds her team, “When we link arms, we can make a real difference in our community.”
