Since quarantine has caused many parents to WFH for almost two years, many of us look around and no longer see a home sweet home, but a house that needs updating (and a deep clean!). And now, more than ever, we don’t have time. Or feel comfortable going out into the world. So online shopping is key. Some apps have emerged that let you approximate what a new paint color, or even cabinets may look like in your home, but what about when you want to feel and see the products that will enhance your home? Havertown Carpet has the solution – they bring the flooring to you.
Getting Started
Started in 2015 by Shane Barry, Havertown Carpet was started to fill in a gap; Shane wanted to transform what can be a long and overwhelming process into a more efficient, customized, and relaxing experience, saving families time – and sanity! Havertown also specializes in durable products that work well in high-traffic areas, standing up to the wear and tear of kids and pets, helping cut down on the analysis paralysis of decision-making.
“Believe it or not, kids are not that interested in carpet shopping,” joked Colleen Barry, mom of three and Havertown Carpet’s marketing and community engagement rep. “Our business offers busy parents the flexibility to shop at a time that works for them and a location that couldn’t be any more convenient.”
Ultimate Convenience
When you reach out, a seasoned professional conducts a phone consult to discuss your needs, and determine the best products for your in-home consultation. After that, they bring samples to you, you make your selection, and they measure to provide a detailed quote. Once you sign off, they order the product, schedule a time, and do the install.
“We also have showrooms for people who like to browse and check out the variety. I’m very much that way, I want to see everything,” said Colleen. She mentioned that, sometimes, people opt for the shop at home experience, then come into the showroom to narrow down their vast selection — they have carpet, laminate, luxury vinyl tile, and luxury vinyl flooring that looks like hardwood.
Custom area rugs are a popular product, too, especially for people who have open floor plans too big for the average off-the-rack rug. The folks at Havertown also make and install custom stair runners. “A lot of people like the warmth of carpet and how easy it is to clean. It also offers a little more grip and makes a statement.”
Havertown Carpet has two locations to shop IRL — their Havertown showroom, open since 2015, and a new location opened in West Chester in 2021, which offers an optimal location for their customer base in Chester County. They serve a wide area – about an hour’s radius from each store, including Chester and DelCo, some of MontCo, Bucks, and Philly.
Community-Minded Customer Service
In addition to providing a one-of-a-kind service, Havertown Carpet focuses on two things: customer service and community engagement.
“One thing we pride ourselves on is customer satisfaction; We’re grateful to our customers who have consistently given us five-star reviews on Google, Facebook, Houzz, and other sites because of the ease of the process from the time people first call to the installation. We were proud to win a LOVE Award from Main Line Parent in 2021! We also get a lot of referrals from happy customers, as well as repeat customers for three or four jobs,” said Colleen.
She also noted that as a family-owned small business with three kids, ages 5, 8 and 10, it’s important to them to give back to their community. The couple grew up in Havertown, went to high school there, and Colleen taught in the local school system. “It was a no-brainer to open in Havertown because we had a strong community and our family is here. We wanted to incorporate that local pride into our store.” They do that through efforts like sponsoring a Little League team, volunteering for local charities, and donations, including a rug giveaway to 300 teachers who needed new, clean décor for their classrooms after rugs were discarded or damaged in storage in the pandemic.
