Ivory Tree Portraits: Building Kids’ Confidence Through Natural Photography

When Lara Aman Mattey was named a Woman of Influence Award Winner in 2023, it was recognition of a mission that goes far deeper than capturing beautiful images

Lara’s Newtown and Wayne-based studios, Ivory Tree Portraits, operate on a philosophy of authentic portraiture. Her style of natural photography style might seem unconventional in today’s heavily filtered world, but it’s all about celebrating children and families exactly as they are.

“It’s not only about the imagery,” Lara said, “but creating an experience that builds kids’ self-confidence while fostering a culture of inclusion and fun.”

A Personal Journey Shapes Professional Purpose

Behind Lara’s natural photography approach to portraiture lies a deeply personal story. When her husband Nick was diagnosed with a degenerative disease in their early twenties, it fundamentally shifted her perspective on what truly matters. This experience became the lens through which she views her work, prioritizing genuine connection and self-acceptance over artificial perfection.

“Receiving this diagnosis for Nick gave me the incredible gift to see the world with a focus on what’s really important,” Lara said.

Happily, she now celebrates 20 years of marriage with Nick. And as a result, she brings this authentic perspective to every family that walks through her studios’ doors.

Going Against the Grain in a Filtered World

In contrast to our era of AI enhancement and heavy retouching, Ivory Tree Portraits chooses to embrace natural portraiture. Lara’s team of skilled photographers does retouch images — she jokes that she gives everyone the best night’s sleep ever. However they never alter permanent features that might make children self-conscious about their natural appearance.

“The second you make their eyes bluer, you’re telling them they aren’t good enough as they are,” Lara explains.

This philosophy extends beyond photography technique. She creates an environment where confidence starts with comfort, builds through strong support systems, and flourishes through genuine laughter.

The Ripple Effect of Self-Confidence

Lara credits her own self-confidence as the foundation for every major achievement in her life. These include climbing the corporate ladder, making the leap to entrepreneurship, building a strong marriage, and becoming the mother she aspired to be. This gift, which she attributes to her parents, is what she’s determined to pass on to the next generation.

“If I can give my clients one thing in this world, it would be self-confidence,” she says. “I believe it’s the underlying characteristic for a happy life.”

A Team That Reflects Their Values

The mission at Ivory Tree extends beyond client relationships to creating a workforce that supports women and working parents. Lara has built a team that shares her commitment to authenticity and community impact. They understand that the studios’ influence reaches far beyond individual photo sessions. Many describe their Ivory Tree photographer as an extension of their own family. In effect, they’re someone who shows up year after year to capture milestones with warmth and care.

The studio’s longevity allows for deep, lasting relationships. From baby’s first portraits to senior photos, families trust Ivory Tree to document every chapter. Even prickly teens feel at ease during sessions, thanks to the photographers’ calm energy and playful spirit. These attributes make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.

Their natural photography approach isn’t just philosophy — it’s been recognized at the highest level. This year, Ivory Tree received the 2025 LOVE Award for Best Photography Studio. The studio continues a multi-year streak of excellence rooted in their kid-led approach to family photography.

Community Impact and Seasonal Celebrations

As we head into the busy fall and holiday season, Ivory Tree Portraits continues to serve families throughout Bucks County, Philadelphia, and the Main Line areas. What’s more, the studios regularly engage in charity work and community initiatives, always listening to client input about which organizations to support.

For families planning holiday family portraits, Lara and her team offer sessions that capture the joy and connection of the season without the pressure of artificial perfection. Their natural approach ensures that families receive images they’ll treasure — ones that truly reflect who they are in this moment.

Looking Forward

Being recognized as a 2023 Woman of Influence has validated what Lara has always believed: that a “crazy dream” of building confidence through authentic portraiture isn’t crazy at all. It’s necessary work in a world that often tells children they need to be different, better, or more polished than they naturally are. In 2024, she took the stage as a speaker to share what she’s learned through both life and business, continuing to inspire other women across our region.

As the holiday season approaches and families begin planning their annual portraits, Ivory Tree Portraits stands ready to offer something increasingly rare — a photography experience that celebrates authenticity, builds confidence, and creates lasting memories that families will genuinely love to display.
