A Voice for the Voiceless

The impact of Melissa Yelito’s work is evident in the many nominations she receives, highlighting her dedication, knowledge, and compassion. One parent shared: “Being a single mother navigating a newly diagnosed autistic child, and having a very hard time within the school with the IEP process, and losing trust and hope, Melissa has been a literal answered prayer. Her integrity and her support towards me and my son has been so amazing. She has advocated for everything I have been unable to do myself.”

This sentiment is echoed across multiple families, who praise Melissa’s ability to navigate the special education system, her responsiveness, and her practical guidance.

From Classroom to Advocacy

Melissa’s advocacy journey began as a public school teacher, working in both special and general education. Witnessing the lack of support for students with unique needs inspired her to transition to advocacy. Her experience across urban, suburban, and rural districts provided a deep understanding of the challenges faced by students, teachers, and parents alike.

She noticed that:

  • All students can learn and thrive.
  • Public schools are often understaffed and lack resources.
  • Parents need guidance navigating complex educational systems.

These insights shaped her mission to support families in understanding their children’s educational rights.

Empowering Through Education

Melissa has supported more than seventy-five families in just over three years. Her approach goes beyond representation in meetings—she teaches families to understand their child’s rights and collaborate effectively with school teams.

“I help clients not only understand what their child is entitled to, but also the best ways to communicate and work with their educational team,” Melissa explains.

Growing a Team and Expanding Services

Over the past year, Melissa expanded her practice, bringing on advocate Emily DiPietro and transition counselor, Erin Brown, to support individuals starting at age 14 as they prepare for adulthood. Many students, often college-bound, benefit from guidance in career readiness and independent living skills, helping them navigate post-secondary success confidently.

Melissa shares, “We’re constantly listening to families to identify areas of need and exploring how our team can meet those needs. Expanding allows us to support more families and provide more comprehensive advocacy services.”

Balancing Advocacy and Motherhood

As a business owner and mother of two young children, Melissa exemplifies the balance many working parents strive for. “I am proud that my children see the value of hard work and passion in pursuing professional dreams,” she says. Her commitment demonstrates that advocacy, business ownership, and family life can coexist.

Advocating for Broader Change

Melissa also volunteers as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), supporting children in foster care and adjudicated youth. She serves as an educational decision-maker for one child, guiding critical educational choices while empowering them to participate in the process.

She continues to advocate for paid parental leave in the U.S., recognizing its potential to improve support for new parents and promote gender equality.

Looking Ahead

Melissa plans to continue expanding her advocacy practice by adding more advocates and exploring additional areas of need within the disability community. She also aims to strengthen community engagement through events, workshops, and initiatives that provide education and resources to families navigating complex educational systems.

Melissa Yelito’s work is more than a career—it’s a mission to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive. Through her expertise, compassion, and dedication, she is changing lives and fostering meaningful shifts in special education advocacy.
