Beyond Public, Private, or Homeschool: Alternative Education Rooted in Community

At Cupola Academy, young people learn, grow, and belong in community, while families find partnership and support along the way

Homeschooled children find community at Cupola Academy in Malvern, PA.

For many Main Line families, choosing an educational path can feel like a series of trade-offs.

A traditional school offers built-in community, experienced educators, and access to resources. But some families want more flexibility or a more personalized approach. Homeschooling can offer that personalization. Yet parents often end up carrying academics, enrichment, and social connection entirely on their own.

What if those things didn’t have to sit on opposite sides of the equation?

At Cupola Academy in Malvern, PA, families are finding another path. Here, learning can be rigorous and joyful, flexible and deeply supported, individualized and collaborative. Cupola’s founding family has pioneered this idea for more than fifty years through an approach called Partnership Education™.

What Is Partnership Education™?

Partnership Education™ begins with a simple idea: a young person’s education is strongest when everyone invested in their growth works together.

At Cupola Academy, young people are active participants in their education, not passive recipients. Experienced Facilitators design intellectually challenging activities focused on applied academics and real-world application. They also provide guidance, mentorship, resources, and opportunities for meaningful learning.

Parents stay connected to their young person’s educational journey. And surrounding them all is a community of peers, families, educators, and alumni.

A Part-Time, In-Person Program in Malvern, PA

Cupola Academy serves young people ages 4–18 through part-time, in-person programs. Students attend two or three days per week on a picturesque 10-acre campus in Malvern.

That schedule creates both rhythm and room. Some days are spent learning alongside peers and Facilitators. On other days, families shape the schedule around independent study, outside classes, travel, family life, or a young person’s particular interests. Cupola Academy supports families throughout.

Learning for Life, Not Just for School

Ultimately, education is about more than where a young person spends their weekdays. It’s about who they are becoming.

Cupola’s approach rests on the belief that childhood wonder and real-world readiness belong together. That’s why its programs blend natural curiosity with applied academics. Academic growth matters. But so do curiosity, creativity, resilience, critical thinking, and integrity.

These values are practiced in community. Young people learn that their ideas matter, and so do the ideas of the person beside them. They make decisions, encounter different perspectives, and contribute to shared projects. They make mistakes, reflect, and try again.

Over time, learning becomes less about completing assignments. It becomes more about building the confidence and skills to engage meaningfully with the world.

That vision has guided Cupola’s founding family for more than fifty years. It began in a one-room schoolhouse and has grown into a learning community of more than 100 people. The details have evolved with each generation. But the philosophy remains the same: education works best when it’s rooted in trust, intellectual curiosity, meaningful relationships, and partnership.

How Learning Works at Cupola Academy

Giving young people agency doesn’t mean leaving them to figure everything out alone.

At Cupola Academy, students have room to follow their curiosity within supportive relationships. Peers learn and collaborate alongside them. Facilitators know when to ask another question, introduce a new skill, or offer a challenge. They also know when to simply give an idea room to unfold.

Learning is collaborative, interdisciplinary, and connected to the world beyond a textbook. On any given day, students might:

  • Launch rockets to put their physics calculations to the test
  • Draft a business plan for a youth-led pop-up shop
  • Explore Shakespeare through performance
  • Conduct a hands-on science experiment
  • Build something in the woodshop
  • Head outdoors to investigate the natural world

Instead of traditional grades, students receive reflection and descriptive feedback. Academic subjects intersect through real-world projects. Curiosity is taken seriously. At the same time, young people are expected to stretch themselves, collaborate with others, and take growing responsibility for their own learning.

Support for the Whole Family

An alternative education shouldn’t require parents to become a school unto themselves.

That’s why the “partnership” in Partnership Education™ extends beyond the student. Cupola’s directors and Facilitators work alongside parents at every stage of the journey. They help families transition out of conventional schooling, identify goals, and respond to challenges. They also help shape an education around a young person’s evolving interests.

Families become part of a wider community, too. There are other parents to learn from and young people to grow alongside. There are people who understand both the possibilities and the questions that come with a less conventional path. Gatherings, workshops, mentorship, and everyday relationships create a network of shared experience and support.

A Homeschool Alternative Where No Family Goes It Alone

For families drawn to the flexibility of homeschooling, that community can change the experience entirely. Education becomes something a family participates in, without carrying it all by itself.

Looking beyond traditional schooling can open new possibilities for young people and their families. But exploring a different approach doesn’t mean navigating it on your own. At Cupola Academy, no family has to walk the alternative education path alone.
