A Parent’s Guide to Asking the Right Questions During a Childcare Tour

Top tips from Kids' Clubhouse of the Main Line!

If you are on the hunt for the perfect childcare or preschool for your child, it can be daunting to know what to ask and what to look for to ensure your child will experience the best care and education possible. By following the below guidelines, you can be confident in your decision.

Do Your Research Ahead of Time

Visit the center’s website and see what information you can find ahead of time, such as “About the Staff,” the curriculum, the daily schedules, the tuition, and any parent forms that would be helpful to view. It will be helpful to know this information prior to the tour so that you can reference it and ask questions. You can also get a good feeling about a center that advertises all of the above information on their website to make it easy for parents to find.

Ask These Questions:

-What is the daily schedule? (Is there a good ratio of learning, free-play, outside time, rest-time?)

-What type of curriculum do you follow?

-How do you handle behavioral issues?

-What is your student to teacher ratio in the classrooms?

-Do you have activities that parents can participate in/special events for families?

-What is your potty training and napping requirement?

-What is included in the tuition? (meals, snacks, diapers, etc.)

-What credentials do teachers have?

Look and Listen While on the Tour

-How are teachers communicating with the children? With co-workers?

-What is the noise-level inside the classrooms?

-How are toys and educational materials placed around the classroom? Does it create a cheerful and purposeful environment?

-What is the general demeanor of the students? Do they look happy and engaged with what the teachers are doing?

Making a Decision

Choosing a childcare center or a preschool is a big decision and one that should not be made lightly. If you follow all of the above guidelines when you are researching and touring a center, you can be confident in your decision to send your child there or not.
