Share the Spirit of Generosity With Your Children This Year
This season of giving finds even more in need, and we found ways you can help!
Regardless of the holidays you celebrate winter has become synonymous with being a season for giving. As children who celebrate gift-giving holidays make their own wish lists parents also wish to impart a spirit of generosity and charity to them. This year the charities we have included in this Giving Guide are seeing record numbers of requests for donations as many families have been hit hard by the pandemic financially. If you are able to share we encourage you to select one of the organizations here, and even if you aren’t able to contribute you could share this post so that maybe others you know can contribute to someone in need.
The Breathing Room Foundation’s mission is to provide care and support to families affected by cancer. They will continue with their mission of providing families with holiday gifts this year, which some changes to make it safer for all. There are limited volunteer opportunities for groups, and there is a focus on family fun nights for the families they serve- with everyone spending more time at home they want to give them new, fun ways to enjoy their time together. To do this you can purchase from their Amazon Wish List, sponsor an individual or family to purchase specific gifts for, make a monetary donation, donate gift cards, or help with deliveries.
Child Guidance Resource Centers provides behavioral healthcare to families. They also have approximately 200 children they are trying to pair with donors in order to provide a holiday filled with joy and happiness. Find their Wish List here!
Each year, there are thousands of children in Chester and the surrounding areas in Delaware County that will not receive toys for Christmas without some help from people who care. At CityTeam, they want to help. This year there are 400 families registered with over 1,200 children! Please consider helping to provide gifts for all of the children by making a one-time donation or signing up to sponsor a child.
Due to Coronavirus DVCC will not be offering their usual Holiday Program as it has been known. Many know this program based on the sponsorship available from the Upper Main Line YMCA, Angel Tree programs, etc. This year their site is requesting all Virtual Giving. Click to their website and you’ll find their online wish list! Couldn’t be easier!
The Gear Up for Winter initiative is underway for Cradles to Crayons. The goal is to help local children stay warm by providing them with long pants and shirts that fit, sweaters & hoodies, socks without holes, warm jammies, winter coats, hats, gloves, and more. This season they will provide more than 20,000 local children with cold-weather essentials. Please help keep kids warm!
Bring holiday joy to Gemma’s children and teens! With the help of many friends and supporters Christmas is a time of joy and cheer for the children and youth served by Gemma. Due to ongoing restrictions on visitors at their locations this holiday season may look different. If you are interested in helping make the holiday season bright this year consider the following options: make a financial gift in the spirit of Christmas, suggest that family or friends make a donation in lieu of a gift to you, donate gift cards to be used to help Gemma’s children and families ($25 increments preferred, see their website for suggested stores), provide a gift from their Wish List (all gifts should be new and unwrarpped). Gifts must be delivered with an appointment, no call ins permitted.
Looking to give to others this holiday season? Want to grant a holiday wish? Everyone can contribute to those in need during this Season of Giving. Grands Stepping Up is a nonprofit based in Havertown that is helping out families all over Delaware County this season. Their mission is to assist grandparents that are taking care of their grandchildren due to the opioid epidemic, mental health issues, incarceration, death, etc. All donations will help provide hope to families and individuals who are less fortunate. You may choose to sponsor a family for gifts, donate to their new Food Pantry and Clothing Closet, or make a cash donation.
SCCA provides legal assistance and social service advocacy for children who have experienced abuse or neglect in Philadelphia County. Many of the children and families served are living in poverty and working to overcome multiple obstacles. The annual Child Advocates Toy Drive has matched gifts to these children and families to help them enjoy a brighter holiday season. This year is the All Gift Card version in recognition of the need to protect the volunteers and staff that would typically work all together at the donation drop spot. Their goal is to provide each child with $50 in gift cards- and there are over 1,400 children on their list so they need your help! Learn how you can get involved with this year’s drive!
The T&E Care Holiday Drive looks different for 2020 but they are still trying their best to help out local neighbors. The biggest change is that more gift cards will be needed, because instead of making the baskets for food and cleaning supplies that they usually make, they are supplementing with additional gift cards. Plus- they have an additional 25 families on their list this year compared to 2019. This one ends soon though, so check their list and commit soon!
There are several volunteer opportunities with the Salvation Army- you can volunteer for general service, the Ministry of the Bells, participate in their Christmas Adopt-A-Child program, the mobile Red Kettle, Community Meal Program, and a few others. Their Christmas Adopt-A-Child program matches donors with a child to purchase gifts from that child’s list. There is also the opportunity to volunteer for preparation and distribution of these gifts!
