Fostering Confidence and Growth

Robert DiNicola has a talent for seeing each student’s potential and helping them believe in themselves. One parent shared how their daughter started the year unsure of herself and struggling with reading and writing—but with Mr. DiNicola’s guidance, encouragement, and individualized support, she gained the confidence to try new activities and participate in team challenges like Reading Olympics. By the end of the year, she no longer needed extra reading support, a first since kindergarten.

Building Relationships Through Daily Connection

In Mr. DiNicola’s classroom at Russell Elementary, every day begins with a check-in question, like “Who made you laugh this weekend?” or “What was your favorite part of yesterday?” He explains, “It gives me insight into their lives without having to ask a million questions, and it opens a line of communication between us.” Afternoon check-ins reinforce this bond, allowing students to reflect on their day and share what they look forward to tomorrow. These small but meaningful routines make students feel seen, valued, and part of a supportive classroom community.

Encouraging Creativity and Critical Thinking

Robert challenges students to explore curiosity through hands-on activities, from math strategy games to creative writing projects and “design your own vending machine” exercises. “Some kids are nervous about speaking up in class,” he says, “so I try to be outward and encouraging—cheering for them when they try and praising their efforts, not just correct answers.” By blending creativity with critical thinking, he helps students develop problem-solving skills while fostering confidence in their abilities.

Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom

Mr. DiNicola’s dedication extends well beyond the school day. He attends students’ extracurricular events, cheering them on at games and performances. “I always wanted teachers who showed up at our games when I was a kid,” he explains. “It made me want to work harder. I want my students to feel that same encouragement and know they’re more than just a number in the classroom.” His visible support strengthens connections and motivates students to give their best.

A Lasting Impact

For Mr. DiNicola, teaching is about more than academics—it’s about shaping how students feel about themselves and their learning journey. Former students often reconnect to share their accomplishments, from middle school milestones to college scholarships, reminding him that the influence of a teacher lasts long after the classroom doors close. He says, “Even the toughest kids, the ones who think you’re not making an impact, they remember the way you made them feel. And that’s what counts.” Through encouragement, personal connection, and individualized support, Robert DiNicola empowers students to grow, thrive, and discover the joy of learning.
