John Curcio, a New Hanover resident and longtime member of the Spring Valley YMCA in Royersford — a branch of the Greater Philadelphia YMCA — is calling on his community to join him as he (for the final time) arm bikes 100 miles to raise funds for the Y’s Annual Campaign on Wednesday, March 5. The Annual Campaign provides free or discounted Y memberships, childcare, camp programs, and swim lessons. John’s fundraising goal for this final ride is $15,000.
John found a supportive community at the Y after a roofing accident and spinal cord injury left him paralyzed and wheelchair-bound 35 years ago. He credits the Spring Valley facility for saving his life and improving his health, and he even joined the Y staff to support others. John is now a familiar face to everyone at the Y, and when he’s not assisting members, you’ll find him on the arm bike nearly every day.
Throughout the day, to support his effort, the Spring Valley YMCA will offer a schedule of themed group fitness classes, including cycling (ride alongside John to cheer him on!), strength training, aerobics, and a fun throwback to ’90s fitness fads. The event will culminate in an Open Ride, where John is expected to cross the 100-mile mark.
Participation is free and open to the public (ID required at check-in). Donations are encouraged, but not required, and corporate/business contributions are welcomed.
