Don’t Try This at Home Day at the Franklin Institute

August 23, 2025 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Free with general museum admission.

For one day only, science gets dangerously fun. Experience “Caution! Don’t Try This at Home” Day, a sizzling spectacle packed with wild, over-the-top experiments you should absolutely not attempt in your kitchen. They will be lighting things on fire, launching objects into the sky, and creating explosions that push the limits of chemistry and physics, all under the expert supervision of their fearless science performers and daring partners.

Expect high-impact explosions and demonstrations every hour, showcasing the power of gravity, pressure, combustion, and chemical reactions. These aren’t just your classroom experiments, they’re the kind that make your jaw drop and your heart race.

Must-see danger zones include:

  • a 500-ball blast triggered by ultra-cold Liquid Nitrogen;
  • a 42-foot Messy drop of Jell-O, slime, possibly a watermelon, and more;
  • a Multi-balloon Fiery Explosion brought to you by Hydrogen, and a little spark; and
  • an opportunity to explore a real fire truck from Philadelphia Fire Department Prevention and Code Division from 1:00-2:00 pm.

Bring your curiosity (and maybe some earplugs)—this is science turned all the way up.
