DESCRIPTION:Join Newlin as they dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under their feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nScheduled 2026 Public Archaeology Days (10 am-3 pm): \nMarch 21\nApril 18\nMay 16\nJune 20\nJuly 18\nOctober 17 – International Archaeology Day \nFree and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend. For safety\, hands-on participation is limited to those ages 5+.

DESCRIPTION:Help celebrate nature and protect the environment with the Earth Day volunteer event at Newlin Grist Mill. This event will be on Saturday\, April 25\, 2026 in two sessions – 9:30 am-12:30 pm & 1:30-4:30 pm. \nEach year\, Newlin brings together diverse volunteers from the community\, including individuals\, families\, scout troops\, and youth groups\, to work on projects that improve habitat for wildlife\, protect important natural resources\, and preserve the park’s plant and animal communities. \nVolunteers will meet to plant trees\, remove invasive plant species\, and improve habitat for birds and wetland wildlife. Groups will be scheduled for 3 hour shifts. \nRegister for a shift by emailing jshahan@newlingristmill.org.

Join them for monthly naturalist-led walks through the 160-acre park at Newlin Grist Mill. \nVisitors will meet year-round residents\, visit exciting migrants\, and learn the basics of bird identification and biology. \n2026 Bird Walks: \nJanuary 31 (9 am)\nFebruary 28 (9 am)\nMarch 28 (9 am)\nApril 25 (8 am)\nMay 30 (8 am)\nJune 27 (8 am)\nJuly 25 (8 am)\nAugust 29 (8 am)\nSeptember 26 (8 am)\nOctober 31 (8 am)\nNovember 28 (9 am)\nDecember 19 – Christmas Bird Count (9 am) \nFamilies and beginners are welcome for these free bird walks! A limited number of binoculars are available for use\, but participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. Participants should meet by the Log Cabin.
