DESCRIPTION:Join Newlin as they dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under their feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nScheduled 2026 Public Archaeology Days (10 am-3 pm): \nMarch 21\nApril 18\nMay 16\nJune 20\nJuly 18\nOctober 17 – International Archaeology Day \nFree and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend. For safety\, hands-on participation is limited to those ages 5+.

Using simple tools like magnifying glasses\, you will uncover the Arboretum’s plants\, animals\, and other seasonal highlights that bring the woodland trails to life. \nAbout your guides:  \nForest Knight is one of Tyler’s Lead Educators. They help run Tyler’s field trips and summer camp programs. They have a love of nature and have worked in the outdoor education field for 4+ years.  \nBarbara Frank is a PA Master Naturalist\, a Tyler-trained docent\, a yoga teacher\, an artist\, and a true lover of nature in all of its manifestations. She leads tours for children and adults.  \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED \nThis program is best suited for elementary school-aged children accompanied by an adult. Family and siblings of any age are welcome. All children must be accompanied by a registered adult. \nCheck in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk at Tyler\, sturdy shoes are suggested. PLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails. We recommend a carrier if you plan to bring an infant or young child. Weather or other factors may adjust the day’s topic\, but nature will always shine through! In case of inclement weather\, the tour will move indoors.

DESCRIPTION:Meet Therese Daniels\, owner of Roots to Branches Soul Studio\, in the woods at Haverford College Arboretum just after the Spring Equinox. Participants will walk together to release and make space for new internal growth as spring begins. \nFollowing nature’s cycles\, winter offered a time for rest. Now\, with the arrival of spring\, it’s time to release and move forward with renewed momentum. \nDuring this mindful walk\, Therese will gently guide participants to reflect\, breathe\, walk\, gather\, release\, and reset. \nParticipants will receive a small journal and tote bag for gathering. DESCRIPTION:Learn to make colorful dyes for your next fabric- or egg-dyeing project from common plants you can find during your next hike or trip to the grocery store! Design and dye one yard of fabric using the batik technique and natural dyes. If you finish early\, try your new skills on smaller\, egg canvases.   \n\n\nAbout your instructor: Tyler Arboretum Lead Educator Erin Conway has decades of experience ruining tablecloths and clothes during dyeing projects\, and now it’s all paying off. With the help of other Tyler staff\, she’s compiled a list of plants that’ll ensure your projects have a bounty of colors\, no matter the time of year! \n\n\nWhat to expect:   \n\n\n\nIndoor workshop\nArrive early to check in at the Visitor Center and enjoy the 5-minute walk to the Edible Garden Classroom. \nBatik uses melted wax to create designs. We will use soy wax\, which melts at a much lower temperature than other waxes\, but can still cause minor burns – especially on sensitive skin.\n\n\n\nWhat to bring: \n\nWear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy.\nClosed-toed shoes and pants are recommended in case of dripping wax.\n\nPre-registration required. \nMEMBERS (sign in for your discount!): $29.75 per person \nNON-MEMBERS: $35 per person. The fee includes admission for the day\, so feel free to stay for the day! \nGUEST PASS HOLDERS (for non-members only): $29.75 per person.
