The woods are full of surprises\, with plenty to see\, hear\, and talk about as you explore. \nWhat to expect: \nGates open at 8:45 am\nCheck in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide.\nLeisurely-paced 1-2 mile trail hike\nLearn how to navigate Tyler’s trail system\nSeasonal observations and nature discovery\nChanges in grade and walking surfaces\, including pavement\, grass\, gravel\, and rocky trails\, and possible stream crossings\nGroup departs from Visitor Center promptly at 9 am – please arrive on time\nRestrooms are available at the beginning and end of the hike \n\nWhat to wear & carry: \nDress in layers for the weather\nHiking boots or sturdy shoes with good tread\nWater and a snack\nStrollers are not suitable on our trails. DESCRIPTION:Join Newlin as they dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under their feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nScheduled 2026 Public Archaeology Days (10 am-3 pm): \nMarch 21\nApril 18\nMay 16\nJune 20\nJuly 18\nOctober 17 – International Archaeology Day \nFree and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend. For safety\, hands-on participation is limited to those ages 5+.

They help run Tyler’s field trips and summer camp programs. They have a love of nature and have worked in the outdoor education field for 4+ years. \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED \nThis program is best suited for elementary school-aged children accompanied by an adult. Family and siblings of any age are welcome. All children must be accompanied by a registered adult. \nCheck in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk at Tyler\, sturdy shoes are suggested. PLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails. We recommend a carrier if you plan to bring an infant or young child. Weather or other factors may adjust the day’s topic\, but nature will always shine through! In case of inclement weather\, the tour will move indoors.
