Few things are as refreshing as a cool frozen dessert in the sweltering summer heat. Ice cream may be the classic, but the Philadelphia area is home to a wide array of options to tempt every pallet. From creamy gelato to succulent water ice, we did a little taste-testing and picked our top sweet treats. Multiple napkins later, try something new at one of these favorites.

Best Gelato

Capogiro
119 S. 13th Street, Philadelphia
215-351-0900
capogirogelato.com; See website for other Philadelphia locations

Philadelphia’s very own Capogiro may be one of the most talked about gelatos in the world. From The New York Times to Oprah, this family-run treasure consistently receives rave reviews, and with good reason. The gelato and sorbet is prepared every morning from scratch, using only natural local ingredients. Customers are treated to more than 25 flavors daily, so there is something for everybody from toddler to teen, and especially mom and dad (Cucumber & Grey Goose, for example).

Best FroYo

Kiwi Frozen Yogurt
392 W. Lancaster Ave., Haverford
484-416-3134

Kiwi puts the fun in froyo! Family owned and operated, Kiwi offers fresh decadent frozen yogurt in three fun steps: choose your flavors, pick your toppings, and weigh and pay by the ounce. With options such as Red Velvet Cake and Thin Mint Cookie, and more than 40 delicious toppings, Kiwi allows everybody in the family to create their own unique yogurt sensation. Bonus: this frozen dessert is low in calories and fat, but contains all the indulgent flavor of ice cream.

Best Water Ice

Capri
238 E. Lancaster Ave., Wayne
610-386-1999

This mom and pop shop wins us over with its reasonably priced icy goodness in flavors from traditional cherry to the creative concoction that is South Seas Punch. And we mean flavor — it’s almost eerie how much fruitiness they get into a little paper cup. Creamy with not a hint of crunch, a heaping cup is a few silver coins away.

Best Family Dispute Settler

Custard & Cakes Creamery
5461 Ridge Ave., Philadelphia
215-487-1920

When mom wants water ice, dad craves yogurt, and the kids scream for ice cream, you are in luck, since this Roxborough shop offers something for everyone. This gem is third generation, family owned and operated since 1955. The menu is chock full of delicious frozen dessert items: hard and soft ice cream, non- at yogurt, sugar-free water ice, shakes, malts, and even a small food menu. They also specialize in a variety of creative and delicious ice cream cakes and serve into the fall (read: pumpkin ice cream!).

Best For Adults Only

Cantina Feliz
424 S. Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington
215-646-1320

Looking for a cup full of something that will cool you down in a way only legally possible after age 21? The frozen mango margarita at this festive Mexican hot spot is a fruity swirl of the perfect summer sipping drink. Made with real fruit, quality tequila, and a splash of lime, it’s a customer favorite. Pair with their authentic dishes (gourmet nachos, really) for a dose of sweet and salty with a kick.
